Concrete Driveway Cost: Pricing by Thickness, Finish, and Base Prep

Concrete driveway bids confuse homeowners more than almost any other exterior project, because "concrete" sounds like a commodity — pour it, it's done — when the price actually swings on things that never show up in a one-line quote. Here's what's really in the number.

Pricing per square foot

  • Standard broom-finish concrete, 4" thick — $6–$10/sq ft installed. The baseline residential driveway: gray, functional, textured for slip resistance.
  • Reinforced concrete, 5"–6" thick (rebar or thicker wire mesh) — $8–$13/sq ft. Needed under heavier vehicles (RVs, dually trucks) or on soil that shifts seasonally.
  • Stamped or exposed-aggregate concrete — $12–$20/sq ft. Decorative finish, more labor-intensive (stamping, staining, or washing back the surface to expose stone), and less forgiving of mistakes — a bad stamp job can't be fixed without breaking it out.
  • Colored or integrally tinted concrete — add $2–$5/sq ft over a comparable plain finish, depending on whether the color is mixed in or applied as a surface hardener.

For a typical 2-car driveway (roughly 600 sq ft), that's $3,600–$6,000 for a standard broom finish, or $7,200–$12,000+ for stamped and colored work.

What actually drives the price within a category

Base prep, not the concrete itself. The single biggest cost variable people never see quoted separately is the gravel base — typically 4"-6" of compacted crushed stone under the slab. Skipping proper compaction is the #1 cause of driveway cracking and settling, and it's invisible once the concrete is poured. A contractor quoting meaningfully below market on a driveway is very often cutting base depth or skipping compaction testing, not using cheaper concrete.

Excavation and grading. A flat, accessible lot with easy equipment access is the cheap case. Removing an existing driveway (asphalt or old cracked concrete), regrading for drainage, or working a site a mixer truck can't reach without a pump adds real labor — often $2–$4/sq ft on top of the base rate for demo and haul-away alone.

Control joints. Concrete cracks — that's not a defect, it's physics as it cures and the ground moves under it. Control joints (cut or tooled lines) tell the slab where to crack instead of letting it crack randomly. Proper joint spacing (typically 8-12 feet, roughly matching the slab thickness in feet times 2-3) is a labor step, not a material cost, and it's the difference between a driveway that ages with clean lines and one that looks like a puzzle in five years.

PSI strength. Standard residential mix runs 3,000-3,500 PSI. Colder climates or heavier loads often call for 4,000 PSI mix with air entrainment (microscopic air bubbles that let the slab survive freeze-thaw cycles without spalling) — a modest per-yard cost bump that matters far more than it costs.

The line items people miss

  • Permits. Many municipalities require a permit for new driveway construction or replacement, especially where it affects the curb cut or right-of-way — usually $50–$300, sometimes with a required inspection before pour.
  • Curb cut / apron work. If the driveway meets a public street, the apron section is often built to a different city-owned spec than the rest of the driveway, sometimes requiring separate approval and a different mix or thickness.
  • Drainage. Concrete doesn't flex, so water has to go somewhere. A driveway poured without attention to slope (typically a 1-2% grade away from the garage or house) can pond water or, worse, direct it toward the foundation — a $200 grading conversation up front versus a real foundation problem later.
  • Sealer. Not always included in a base quote. Sealing (every 2-3 years after initial cure) protects against de-icing salt damage, oil staining, and freeze-thaw spalling — worth itemizing as a line so it's a decision, not a surprise omission.
  • Cure time before use. Concrete is typically walkable in 24-48 hours but needs 7 days before vehicle traffic and closer to 28 days to reach full strength — worth stating explicitly in the estimate so the client isn't parking a car on it Day 3.

DIY vs. hire

A small, flat concrete pad is within reach for an ambitious DIYer. A full driveway usually isn't, for one practical reason: ready-mix concrete sets on its own schedule, not yours, and a driveway-sized pour needs enough hands to place, screed, and finish the whole slab before it starts curing — running out of daylight or manpower mid-pour is how you get a visibly split cold joint across your driveway forever. Base compaction also takes equipment (a plate compactor at minimum) most homeowners don't own and won't rent correctly on the first try.

Structuring the estimate

A concrete driveway estimate splits cleanly into three phases worth keeping visible rather than folding into one number: site work (demo of the old surface, excavation, grading, base gravel and compaction), concrete (the pour itself — mix design, thickness, reinforcement, finish, and any color or stamp work), and finishing (control joints, edging, curing, and sealer).
